Over at EmptyBottle.Org we have a pretty insightful post regarding teaching English abroad. I have juggled the possibilities of myself going over to teach in either Korea or Japan (there is a difference that's for sure) and I have been studying for a bit of time and have had my opens to a great many things.
Anyways you can read the little essay here. Hopefully it can open a few eyes or so regarding what a MAJOR decision that is.
Also I suggest taking a look at Dave's ESL Cafe and AsiaXpat.com for discussion, information, and accommodation on all things regarding teaching English in Asia. If this has ever interested these would be good resources. It can be an eye-opening experience.

Merry Christmas,
Yes, doing the ESL thing for a year is a good way to see another part of the world without missing your student loan payments, but be careful. I came to teach English in Korea for a year...... that was five years ago and I'm here for at least two more.

Ooooh yes I know that part of it too. I can't really consider staying a bad thing. And I know you Yangban have found an incredible life there and soon to be wife. So it is a gamble...
But if you are young and looking for an experience, if you research enough I would say go for it. I still have a few years before I reach that point but I think I mayvery well do it for a bit of time...
And Merry Christmas to you...

My best-laid plan was to stay in Seoul for six months, then go do the slacker/Bohemian thing in Prague for a year or two, then square up to real life back in California. That was back in 1992.

No Bohemian deal for me currently planned. End destination of California might still be there (come full circl and such) but who knows. I really want to spend a certain portion of my life in Asia whether doing work for the federal government or just being at the end self-employed, a regular renaissance man. I'm still young so I can expect that to change fifty times before anything even happens. We'll just have to see.

Oh and Southern California still has plenty of cars and plenty of parking lots. More in fact.

I stumbled across your blog while I was doing some online research. I had the privilege of teaching in Japan for quite some time, and I found it a truly rewarding experience.
