Merry Christmas to the rest of us and I hope each and every one of you are getting what your hearts desired. After a long night I was up early due to my lovely younger sisters eager to open their presents and so with a little time on my hands I figured I'd let me readership know about a few lesser (depending on your attention to the film industry) known films that are coming around.
The first is Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow. A movie shot entirely via blue screen (the same SFX technique Lucas has used for his prequels) it boasts an impressive cast including Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie. The film certainly has an interesting aesthetic and I get some major Rocketeer vibes from it, which is a movie a certainly enjoyed due to its old time comic feel. You can view the trailer here, which includes giants robots, an eye patched Jolie, and some large scale destruction. An early official site can be viewed here.
Whether it will be good or not is anybody's guess so far but I did like what I saw. The movie is set for a summer 2004 release.
The next movie I want to call attention to is Blueberry. A film by the director Jan Kounen of Dobermann fame, starring Vincent Cassel (married to Monica Bellucci and ooooh what a lucky guy!) and Michael Madsen of soon to be Kill Bill 2 fame. It is based on two French comics and set in the Wild West with a supernatural background. I saw the teaser trailer several months ago and my interest became piqued but without any more information I had forgotten about the film till now. Now here comes the trailer along with the main site and I am back anticipating this film for February 2004.
Let me just say Vincent Cassel is a VERY good actor and I have heard good things about Dobermann so all signs point to an interesting movie experience (I wouldn't post it otherwise).
Let me also state for the record that some of the movies I mention may be tougher for some audiences than others. After watching Asian films for a number of years certain themes become less shocking after awhile. Over time I have come to accept films (but not all) from some rather "eccentric" directors. Hopefully though you can find what you enjoy and be forewarned about anything that might not be your cup of tea. I just ask you draw your own conclusions as many of the films listed here will not be standard Hollywood fare.
